「初めのうちは気の付かない程度だが、ある日急に、何もする気がしなくなってしまう。
何についても関心が無くなり、何をしても面白くない。

この無気力はそのうちに消えるどころか、少しずつ激しくなってゆく。日ごとに、週を重ねるごとに、酷くなる。
気分はますます憂鬱になり、心の中はますます空っぽになり、自分に対しても、世の中に対しても、不満が募ってくる。

そのうちにこういう感情さえなくなって、およそ何も感じなくなってしまう。

何もかも灰色で、どうでもよくなり、世の中はすっかり遠のいてしまって、自分とは何の関わりもないと思えてくる。
怒ることもなければ、感激することもなく、喜ぶことも悲しむことも出来なくなり、笑うことも泣くことも忘れてしまう。

そうなると心の中は冷え切って、もう人も物も一切愛することが出来ない。

ここまでくると、もう病気は治る見込みがない。後に戻ることは出来ないのだよ。
うつろな灰色の顔をしてせかせか動き回るばかりで、灰色の男とそっくりになってしまう。

そう、こうなったらもう灰色の男そのものだよ。
この病気の名前はね、致死的退屈症と言うのだ」
